Robert James Nightingale

Robert James Nightingale of Clifton, NJ passed away peacefully at home on June 22, 2023, he was 83. Bob was born in Paterson on January 9, 1940 to Garrett and Margaret (McLaughlin) Nightingale. He lived in Wyckoff and Franklin Lakes before settling in Clifton. Bob was the owner of Nightingale Catering, New Jersey’s original Beefsteak Company since 1938, where he spent his career building upon the successful business started by his father, Hap Nightingale. That business, now in the third generation with son Rob, has been continuously catering for over 85 years.

Bob played basketball at Clifton high school and Fairleigh Dickinson University. He proudly served in the United States Army, helped form the Don Bosco Touchdown Club and supported the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan, loved world travel and cruising.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Maureen (Gerrard) Nightingale; his loving children, Nancy O’Brien and her husband John and Robert James Nightingale Jr. & his wife Amy; his beloved grandchildren, Anna, John, Trey and Riley as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were private. Family and friends are invited to share their condolences on the website. Contributions in Bob’s name to Shriners Hospitals for Children, P.O. Box 947765, Atlanta, GA 30394, would be appreciated.
