Louis L. Salerno, MD - 1913 - 2007 All who had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Louis L. Salerno, even those with whom he was only casually acquainted, will remember him lovingly for his endearing manner, his generosity and selflessness. Louis passed away on Wed., August 1st after 94 fulfilling years. He was a caring, devoted husband to Elizabeth to whom he was happily married for 57 years until her death in 1999; father to six children - Roberta Rento, Lynn Borstelmann, Mary Jane Detroyer, Louis Salerno, Jr., Beth Amato and Catherine Moss; grandfather of 14 and great-grandfather of 18. He is survived by his siblings: Josephine Cuccaro, Martha Persico, Pat Salerno and Dorothy Algazzina Louis was raised in the Athenia section of Clifton, oldest son of first generation Italian American parents. He was the first in his family to receive a college degree, attending the University of North Carolina and earning his medical degree at Loyola in Chicago. After bravely serving his country in WWII, spending over 30 months as a prisoner of war in Europe, Louis returned to civilian life in Clifton and set up general practice. He later chose anesthesiology as a specialty. Louis was a pillar of the staff at St. Mary's Hospital in Passaic for over 40 years and served as Medical Staff President in 1970. He retired from practice in 1983 and spent his later years modestly enjoying the love and devotion of his thriving family.
