Raia, Joseph, Sr., 95 of HoHoKus, formerly of Garfield and Wyckoff, on September 29, 2007. Beloved husband of the late Theresa De Rose. Dear father of Joseph Raia Jr. & his wife Annette of Franklin Lakes, Lawrence Raia & his wife Elaine of Saddle River, Nina & her husband Jim Marrocco of Wayne & Samuel Raia & his wife Tina of Saddle River. Brother to Margaret Van Haeren of Passaic & Anthony Raia of PA. Also survived by 11 grandchildren & 23 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his siblings: Charles Raia, Jr., Jack Raia, Carl Raia, Lucy Graham, Lillian Raia & Mamie Caravella. Also survived by his second wife Dorothy. Mr. Raia founded Joseph Raia & Sons that he established in Garfield in 1930 with one model T dump truck. In the late 60 s he was joined by his sons and this operation evolved into Raia Industries which ultimately became New Jersey s largest redi-mix concrete producer along with asphalt and aggregates. The Raia operation employed over 500 people and supplied concrete, aggregates and asphalt throughout northern New Jersey and lower New York State. The colorful red, white and blue concrete mixers became a familiar site up and down the highways and on major projects in the area. Mr. Raia was highly respected for his achievements and received many industry and civic awards over his lifetime. Funeral Mass Thursday 10 AM at St. Gabriel the Archangel RC Church, 88 E. Saddle River Road, Saddle River. Interment -St. Mary s Cemetery Saddle Brook. Visiting Wednesday 2-4 & 7-9 at the Marrocco Memorial Chapel 470 Colfax Avenue, Clifton. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted for the Joseph and Theresa Raia Scholarship Fund, 500 No. Franklin Turnpike, Ramsey, NJ 07446.
